SUMMARY:Exhibition “TRUE LOVE: A Tribute to Grant Lingard”
DESCRIPTION:Thu 29th April – Friday 28th May – 10:00am to 4:00pm – Ilam Campus Gallery\, School of Fine Arts Building 2\, University of Canterbury\n⠀\nGrant Lingard was many things: from a West Coast mining family\, he was a snappy dresser\, an avid collector of everything from action-toy figurines to records\, a Punk Disco dancer\, a storyteller\, an instigator of the Christchurch Artists’ Collective\, companion to his black cat Black Cat\, a graduate of the School of Fine Arts programme\, and\, of course\, a gay man at a moment when attitudes towards homosexuality\, and the law\, were changing.⠀\n⠀\nIf he has the distinction of being ‘…considered by many to be New Zealand’s leading gay visual artist’[1]\, he was also a victim of the tragedy that struck the gay community in the 1980s: AIDS. With his death Aotearoa New Zealand lost an artist and art activist of significance too soon\, his legacy left barely revealed. Perhaps this is a failure to acknowledge “queer art heroes”\, or because the 1980s are easy to forget\, or because his work had ephemeral\, feral qualities that make its collection and preservation difficult.⠀\n⠀\nWhile TRUE LOVE cannot fill the void\, 25 years later\, we hope to contribute to an ongoing discussion about this wonderful\, queer person. It is our (im)provisional response to Grant\, his memory\, his artwork.⠀\n⠀\nGrant’s art alongside that from Bronwyn Takle\, Diane Miller\, Gary Freemantle\, Gina Ferguson\, Graham McFelin\, Grant Takle\, Jeremiah Boniface\, Jessica Douglas\, Julian Holcroft\, Michael Armstrong\, Paul Dew\, Paul Johns\, Paul Rayner\, Richard Reddaway\, Ruth Watson\, Sara Ayad\, Sandra Bushby\, Seraphine Pick\, Simon Morris\, Teri Johnson\, Terry Urbahn and Trevor Fry. SUMMARY:MONO Presents: Dr. Reknaw with Horizone & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand these children of the sun advocate for Papatuanuku (Mother Earth)\, plant medicine\, social/environmental justice\, indigenous rights and honoring Tikanga Maori. \nFounded by sisters Julia (lead vocals) and Sophie Cooper (vocals/bass)\, Dr. Reknaw has grown into an empowering groove-machine. The band is an eight piece formation that\nincludes driving rhythms\, uplifting harmonies and enchanting horns. \nA year after the release of their first EP ‘Earthly Delights’\, Dr. Reknaw are thrilled to be celebrating their debut studio album with a nation wide tour. \n‘REKTIFIED’ is a 9 track journey\, through soul\, roots\, hip-hop and psychedelic sounds\, seamlessly woven together over some of the most grooving rhythms. The two sisters etherial vocals share messages of love and wisdom\, while the other 6 doctors have decorated this sonic masterpiece with mouthwatering colours and the most uplifting sounds. This incredible album was recorded at the surgery studios\, and produced by Toby Lloyd ( Tiny Triumph Productions). \nReady to create waves of good vibrations around Aotearoa\, Dr. Reknaw are coming to a town near you this April\, bringing the live set of your dreams. \n——————————————————————————\nHorizone is one of New Zealand’s freshest new funky dub bands which was born out of the necessity for a post-earthquake Christchurch music scene. Josh Burke (Vocals) and Matty Coleman (Bass) were working on an acoustic music project when they decided to expand their acoustic duo to a full 5 piece band\, which set the stage for Tyler Robbins (Drums)\, Mattisse Kennedy (Guitar) and Saba Charles (Keyboards) to join the band to form what is now known as Horizone \nThe sound of Horizone is broad and is constantly overflowing into new musical genres. “Shine”(2019) has a chill reggae vibe and is inspired by NZ legends\, The Black Seeds and Fat Freedy’s Drop. Other songs like “Gravity” (2018) have influences that come from the early days of Salmonella Dub. \nIn this modern age of an ever-changing music industry\, Horizone pride themselves on being an independent entity with a DIY attitude which has propelled them to be able to write\, record\, produce\, master\, film\, tour\, host events\, and sell merchandise independently. \n—————————————————————————— \nThe MONO specific stuff:\n– Mono is R18 – Bring your Passport\, 18+ card or NZ Drivers licence.\n– Don’t forget your UC Student ID!\n– Not a UC student? Then you better find a mate who is! You won’t get in otherwise. You are their plus one. Note: It’s plus one not plus five!\n– Not a UC students plus one?
