SUMMARY:Exhibition “TRUE LOVE: A Tribute to Grant Lingard”
DESCRIPTION:Thu 29th April – Friday 28th May – 10:00am to 4:00pm – Ilam Campus Gallery\, School of Fine Arts Building 2\, University of Canterbury\n⠀\nGrant Lingard was many things: from a West Coast mining family\, he was a snappy dresser\, an avid collector of everything from action-toy figurines to records\, a Punk Disco dancer\, a storyteller\, an instigator of the Christchurch Artists’ Collective\, companion to his black cat Black Cat\, a graduate of the School of Fine Arts programme\, and\, of course\, a gay man at a moment when attitudes towards homosexuality\, and the law\, were changing.⠀\n⠀\nIf he has the distinction of being ‘…considered by many to be New Zealand’s leading gay visual artist’[1]\, he was also a victim of the tragedy that struck the gay community in the 1980s: AIDS. With his death Aotearoa New Zealand lost an artist and art activist of significance too soon\, his legacy left barely revealed. Perhaps this is a failure to acknowledge “queer art heroes”\, or because the 1980s are easy to forget\, or because his work had ephemeral\, feral qualities that make its collection and preservation difficult.⠀\n⠀\nWhile TRUE LOVE cannot fill the void\, 25 years later\, we hope to contribute to an ongoing discussion about this wonderful\, queer person. It is our (im)provisional response to Grant\, his memory\, his artwork.⠀\n⠀\nGrant’s art alongside that from Bronwyn Takle\, Diane Miller\, Gary Freemantle\, Gina Ferguson\, Graham McFelin\, Grant Takle\, Jeremiah Boniface\, Jessica Douglas\, Julian Holcroft\, Michael Armstrong\, Paul Dew\, Paul Johns\, Paul Rayner\, Richard Reddaway\, Ruth Watson\, Sara Ayad\, Sandra Bushby\, Seraphine Pick\, Simon Morris\, Teri Johnson\, Terry Urbahn and Trevor Fry. Catalogue essays by David Herkt and Peter Derksen. \nMORE INFO

SUMMARY:CANTA presents: The Ed Wood’s Student Film Awards
DESCRIPTION:The (not so?) great Ed Wood is widely regarded as the “Worst Director of All Time”. His films are notable for their campy aesthetics\, technical errors\, unsophisticated special effects\, use of ill-fitting stock footage and eccentric casts. \nIn the spirit of Ed Wood\, we are on the lookout for the “best worst film” at the 2021 Ed Wood Student Film Awards \nTo be part of student filmmaking immortality\, all you have to do is create a film and enter it into one of the following categories: \n\n“Feature” Length Film\n\n1 – 5 minutes long\nOriginal (although feel free to rip off some other film…)\nMade mostly by UC students (hey\, a bit of outside help is OK)\n\n\n\n  \n\nOne Minute Wonder\n\nUp to 1 minute long\nCan be anything! (Literally anything…)\nMade mostly by UC students (hey\, a bit of outside help is OK)\n\n\n\nAwards will be presented for: \n\nBest (Worst) Actor\nBest (Worst) Cinematography\nBest (Worst) Editing\nBest (Worst) Soundtrack\nBest (Worst) Costumes\nBest (Worst) Special Effects\nBest Celebrity Cameo\nBest use of Whiteware\nBest (Worst) film (Under 5min Long)\nPeople’s choice award\nBest (Worst) worst Speech\n\n  \nYou can use any camera you want to make the film. Your dad’s flash RED. Your brother’s handicam. Your dog’s iPhone. All that matters is that the film is (somewhat) watchable. And listenable. Think about audio. PLEASE think about audio… \nFilms must be submitted to the events@ucsa.org.nz via Dropbox\, or on a USB drive. It’s OK\, we’ll give you the USB drive back. \nIdeally\, the final format would be an .mp4 or .mov – but if it plays on VLC\, you should be fine. \nUCSA reserves the right to remove any film that is deemed too offensive\, or just plain horrible to watch/listen to. Our standards are pretty low. If in doubt\, ask us first. \nUCSA also reserves the right to make use of any film submitted. \nSend any questions to: events@ucsa.org.nz \n  \nEd Wood Rules 2021 \n\nYou can use old footage of yours if you choose to\, but you need to put it together during this time.\nThe categories for entry are:\n\n\n“Feature” Length Film\n\nBetween 1 minute and 5 minutes long\, including any titles and credits.\nOriginal (although feel free to rip off some other film…)\nCan be about anything – show us your creativity!\n\n\nOne Minute Wonder\n\nNo more than 1 minute long\, including any titles and credits.\nCan be anything! (Literally anything… we have had a clip reel of a guy scaring his flatmate)\nBasically a good insta story…\n\n\n\n\nThe ‘film’ must be delivered using our recommended file specs by midnight Sunday\, 19th of May\, uploaded via our online form.\nYou must have the rights to all material that appears in the ‘Film’. Please ensure you have permission from all actors\, locations\, music and anything else that you need permission for that you use in the ‘Film’.\nDo not upload the ‘film’ onto the internet until after the screening night.\nYou can use any camera you want to make the “film”\, however all that matters is that the “film” is (somewhat) watchable\, and listenable. You must think about audio. PLEASE think about audio…\nThe UCSA will remove any film that is deemed too offensive\, or just plain horrible to watch/listen to. Our standards are pretty low. If in doubt\, ask us first.\nThe UCSA has the right to make use of any film submitted.
