UCASS talk amateur sports, poker and slip ‘n’ slides

This week on Join the Club we’re talking with one of UC’s big social groups, UCASS.

Billing themselves as a way to avoid the ‘fresher five’, the team are all about sports, having a laugh, and sharing a cheeky drink. Along the way, they’ve even been named UC’s Supreme Club, taking out the top prize in late-2020.

How would you describe your club to newbies?

UCASS: We’re a club based around the concept of bringing people together, playing sport and being amateur, because being a pro is overrated.

What do you offer students?

UCASS: We run a range of events throughout the year – big and small – based around getting to know your peers over competition and some bevvys. We also have at least one team in each social sport league that’s run by the Rec Centre, which are free to play in when you sign up with us.

What events do you run?

UCASS: Our staple events are our 3×3 Basketball Tournament we run in Ngaio Marsh Theatre and UCASSINO, where we run a Casino in Bentley’s with Roulette, Blackjack, Poker and all other avenues for punting. We have also done Flat Crawls and Soap Football in the past.

What’s your favourite club memory?

UCASS: Getting to know a bunch of new people through a common love for amateur sports.

UCSA: If you’re keen to join UCASS or any other club on campus, head along to Clubs Day during O.Week and RE-ORI or have a look at UCSA’s Clubs Database – there are around 160 student-led groups ranging from sports, to culture and art!

Follow UCASS on Facebook and Instagram.
